Antibody/antigen combination tests. They check for HIV antigen, a protein called p24 that’s part of the virus and shows up 2 to 4 weeks after infection. Also, they check for HIV antibodies produced by the body. Antibodies are produced by your immune system when you’re exposed to viruses like HIV. Hence, if you have HIV, an antigen called p24 is produced even before antibodies develop. Lastly, for any viral screening Viral Screening Altona North VIC 3025, please contact us!

  • There are three main types of HIV tests: antibody assessments:,
    • HIV RNA tests: The HIV RNA is totally different than all human RNA, and tests have been developed to detect HIV RNA in an individual’s blood. Because this test can be used to detect and estimate the amount of circulating HIV in the blood. It is often referred to as an HIV viral load. Hence, this uses a type of test called a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
    • HIV Antibody-antigen test: The HIV Ab-Ag test detects antibodies directed against HIV-1 or HIV-2, as well as a protein called p24, which forms part of the core of the virus (an antigen of the virus). So, this is important because it takes weeks for antibodies to form after the initial infection. Even though the virus (and the p24 protein) is present in the blood. Thus, Ab-Ag testing may allow for earlier detection of HIV infections
    • HIV antibody tests: HIV possesses many distinctive proteins on its surface and inside the virus itself. Also, when someone is infected with HIV, their body produces proteins designed to tag the virus for elimination by the immune system. So, these proteins are called antibodies, and they are directed against the unique proteins of HIV. Sadly, these HIV antibodies do not eliminate the virus.

There are two kinds of tests that can be carried out to detect whether a person has been infected with SARS-CoV-2 and has the COVID-19 virus:

  1. The test detects the presence of the actual SARS-CoV-2 virus in your body. Hence, this usually done by testing if the virus is present in your nasal secretions (snot) or sputum (saliva/spit).
  2. Tests that detect whether your body has developed / produced antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 infection. So this is usually done by taking a sample of your blood and testing your blood for specific antibodies to detect.

Lastly, for more information on the testing process visit the Australian department of Health Site:
